"Education for all"
HIRDA is proud to announce that the Teacher Training Project has been successfully implemented at three secondary schools in the Gedo region in Somalia. The training project that started six months ago, is part of HIRDA’s larger aim to increase the quality of (secondary) education. It was found necessary to have a strategy in which all stake-holders involved, received awareness training. Some of the teachers also needed to be equipped with teaching materials to improve their abilities to teach and that was the core of Gedo education capacity building.

Last Thursday, 8 March, was international women’s day. Although HIRDA did not celebrate this day in the Netherlands, it did support several partners in Somalia enabling them to commemorate this day. With thematic discussions, women organisations throughout Somalia came together discussing issues concerning them. In Mogadishu several women organisations came together and discussed equal opportunities for boys and girls in the field of education and their position in society. In Abudwak women also discussed this issue, adding to the discussion the important role of women in peace building.

About 98% of the Somali women undergo this procedure which has affected the health of many. In 2012 we initiated the campaign ‘Proud of me’ through which we aim to reach a widespread region in Somalia while at the same time we raise awareness in the Netherlands of our fight against FGM in Somalia, aiming to make the Dutch public more involved in Somalia and FGM.

September, 2011 HIRDA’s made a humanitarian donation appeal to both the International Aid agencies and Somali community in the Diaspora to respond to the severe drought in Somalia. Comic relief, IDRF, HCI, ETWA and Somali Diaspora have all answered HIRDA’s call by donating both money and in-kind. Through this support and donations, HIRDA was able to reach and help many Somalis living in the IDP camps in Beled Hawo. This drought has immensely affected most of the regions in the central part of the country, causing both human and animal death. The drought has been the cause of the displacement of many families in Somalia.
