HIRDA Team: the winner of Summer football tournament 2010
The HIRDA Soccer summer Tournament was first held in May 2008 as part of HIRDA,s goal to engage the youth in development by organizing a football tournment among the youth in the Netherlands. We believe that sports is a tool through which we can meaningfully encourage and engage the youth to participate in development activities and initiatives both in their countries of origin as well as countries of residence. This years tournament was a huge success, and a decision was made to continue holding it yearly. The tournament was organised this year on Sunday 16th May and total of 8 teams competed during the one day tournament which included approximately 100 players taking part in over 24 matches.
The tournament started with two pools of four teams. Pool A contained teams HIRDA, Vlaardingen, Hoorn,Dordrecht, Den haag. The Pool B contained teams Den bosch, Venerei, Hoorn, Alpen a/d Rijn. HIRDA, Vlaardingen, Hoorn and Dordrecht dominated their groups and won to the semi-finals. However, in the semi-final stage Hoorn lost on panelties against the Vlaardigen team and HIRDA won against the Dordrecht team. HIRDA and Vlaardingen finished top of their respective pools and made it into the finals, where HIRDA with an excellent performance completed the tournament by winning the cup of HIRDA summer soccer tournament 2010 after a (2-1) win against Vlaardingen.
The matches were very competitive, particularly in the finals in which spectators witnessed excellent football from both teams. HIRDA were the eventual winners, beating Vlaardingen 2-1 with fantastic goals. HIRDA Soccer Coach Mohamed yusuf (Abuuna), assistant coach Abdi Hirsi (Nani) presented the players with medals and the winning team with the trophy. The standard of football played shows that there are many talented youth players in young Somali-Dutch migrants and that they need to be discovered and utilized in professional teams.
The HIRDA summer Soccer Tournament 2010 was well received by participants and spectators who thanked the hard work of the organisers and the sponsors. HIRDA Soccer team would like to thank the director of HIRDA for funding the event, the volunteers and staff of all the Teams who competed, and also the kind and helpful staff of NFC club in Amstelveen who allowed us to use their football field. We look forward to making this an annual event and improving on this fantastic opportunity to engage the young generation in development, friendship and sporting competition.
