"We believe in equal opportunities for boys and girls"
Every year a lot of students after graduating from Secondary schools in somalia do not get the opportunity to further their education. This is because of the financial constrains that faces students and their families. These students do not also find jobs to do. Based on this problem HIRDA has over the years been lobbying to ensure that a certain number of students each year get the opportunity to pursue their education.
This year 20 students from HIRDA schools have been awarded a scholarship to pursue their university education at Sheik University which is located in the North part of Somalia and Mogadishu University located in the South.
As part of the scholarship programme, ten(10) of the students will be taken through teacher education programmes so at the end of the programme they come out as professional teachers. The other ten(10) students will also be taken through veterinary studies. These two programmes were chosen based on the fact that currently there are insufficient teachers to teach in schools in somalia and also on the need to train veterinary personnal to take care of the health of livestocks considering the fact that life in most parts of Somalia are Pastorial in nature.
Student were selected by HIRDA and they don’t have to pay for the tuition for the studies.
It is hope that this programme which will be done every year will motivate other students to study hard so they can also study up to the university level and contribute meanfully to their communities.
