"We believe in equal opportunities for boys and girls"
Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a violation of human rights and poses immediate and longterm health consequences to girls and women. Despite this, there remains little awareness, particularly amongst young people, or engagement with communities and families. FGM is a major concern in Somalia which is not being adressed at all. Many women do not have enough information about this harmfull practice. FGM has detrimental health, psychological and social effects. It is important to address the issues around this traditional practice.
HIRDA's intention is to create a campaign which will bring back the attention of the public to the practice of FGM with the endresult to eradicate FGM. HIRDA encompasses partnerships with diverse nongovernmental humanitarian agencies including Oxfam-Novib, HIVOS and local women organizations to eradicate this harmfull practice. HIRDA's objectives are: raising wider awareness of FGM and developing a national advocacy campaign, initiating a comprehensive approach to FGM prevention education in Somalia and the Netherlands, and working together with key stakeholders within the Netherlands and other European countries. HIRDA has provided professional training to strengthen the capacity of TBA's in Gedo region.
