IDP project in Beledhawo (South-central-Somalia)

September, 2011 HIRDA’s made a humanitarian donation appeal to both the International Aid agencies and Somali community in the Diaspora to respond to the severe drought in Somalia. Comic relief, IDRF, HCI, ETWA and Somali Diaspora have all answered HIRDA’s call by donating both money and in-kind.
Through this support and donations, HIRDA was able to reach and help many Somalis living in the IDP camps in Beled Hawo.
This drought has immensely affected most of the regions in the central part of the country, causing both human and animal death. The drought has been the cause of the displacement of many families in Somalia. According to the head of the U.N refugee agency it was the "worst humanitarian disaster" in the world and the worst droughts in 60 years. The drought forced thousands of people flee to the neighbouring countries and regions. Many starving families have walked for weeks and months through an anarchic landscape with no food and water to reach other regions in central Somalia especially to the make-shift IDP camps in Galgadud and Hiiraan where the drought was less severe.

Three IDP camps with an estimated accommodation capacity of 4000 household was established in Beled Hawo. With no support from the weak central government of Somalia, HIRDA did everything in their might to mobilize the international Aid Agencies so that they could help these IDPs who need urgent need and thousands of others at risk.

Comic Relief was the first donor agency who promptly responded to HIRDA humanitarian call, while IDRF, SRF, HCI Comic relief and ETWA have significantly contributed and this has enable HIRDA to expand its projects in the field of relief food, sanitation , education to children by establishing temporary schools at the IDP camps, malnutrition program and distribution of mosquito net and household equipments to the displaced people in the camps.

On 13th & 14th January 2012 , the massive contribution and emergency fund donated by Comic Relief made it possible for HIRDA to respond immediately and distribute rice, wheat flour, cooking oil and domestic utensils to 256 households comprising of elderly, disabled , widowed mothers and children in Beled Amin IDP Camp .

With the emergency fund it got from Comic Relief ,HIRDA built 30 toilets and 4 water tanks for the internally displaced person (IDP) in the Beled Amin Village camp.

There is extreme harsh living conditions in these camps that can lead to outbreak of diseases that is hard for the young and elderly to fend off. However, with the support of Comic relief and other Funders. There have being significantly improved the living standards of the Internally displaced persons in the makeshift camps in Gedo  and Hiiraan.
