In 2000 HIRDA built the Dr Qasim primary school named after a peace-loving Somali medical doctor murdered by bandits. The school has a capacity for 390 pupils who attend classes in two shifts-morning and afternoon.
With concern on youths between the ages of 18 and 25 whose aspirations are obstructed by wars, HIRDA is in the advance stage of its pilot vocational training centre in Bardera. In its third year, the trade centre has given skills to youths in woodwork, technical fitting and repair. HIRDA plans to develop the school further till it stands by itself.
Parallel with formal basic education, HIRDA runs adult education centres to support the educational need of adult people. The curriculum of HIRDA Adult education include basic counting, reading and writing as well as awareness courses that relate with the social life of the community; targeting hygiene, leadership skill, civil participation, peace and environment. Most of the adult graduate of the centre are now useful both to their society and in HIRDA works.

Since 2003, HIRDA acquired an existing community farmland in Hilfato. HIRDA has transformed the farm from growing tropical wild fruits to production of more needed stable food crops for surrounding communities. The more that 50-hectare farm plot has provided 60 community residents’ with farm jobs of planting, weeding, harvesting and distribution. While seasonal flooding continues to obstruct HIRDA plans, the benefits of the farm remain to be fully tapped. At its pilot stage, HIRDA has learnt how to reduce the effects of severe flooding with trenches technique. This technique will live to benefit other farmers in flooding regions of Somalia.
The goal of HIRDA farm and Agriculture project is to train villagers, especially younger people in profitable agriculture occupation. Modern farming methods, use of fertilizers, poultry breeding and building cooperative network are among core areas where HIRDA is focusing to improve Somalia internal food production and distribution. In the coming years, HIRDA will intensify works at the farm with more activities on recruiting young school leavers for trainings that will enable them at graduation to own their own crop or poultry farm business. HIRDA will support them with Agro micro finance assistance to enable make a start.
